Here is a quick summary of cPanel and what it can offer you to those that might not really understand what it is.
cPanel is a control panel that is web-based and designed to help you with the administraion of websites and such. It provides front-ends for various operations such as mail, FTP accounts, installation of certain add-ons and more. Usually it comes with Fantistico or Installatron but that would depend on your webhost, they include many scripts that is programmed to be automatically install such as WordPress, phpBB, b2, Coppermine Gallery etc. Some may also be automatically updated as well. cPanel also allows you to create subdomains, addon domains as well as park domains.

When given a domain or subdomain with cpanel, in the root directory of your website using FTP you will see alot of folders - the main folder you should really be using is public_html. This is the folder where all your website files should be in, don't mess around with the other folders unless you know what you are doing. Those folders are used by your cpanel.
